US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - Illinois
Summary
St. Louis District personnel visited the Illinois Army National Guard (ILARNG) Headquarters in December 1997, and the Illinois State Museum in Springfield in July 1998, to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on three federally owned or federally supported Army National Guard facilities in the state: Camp Lincoln, Marseilles Training Area, and Riverside Maintenance Center. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on these federally owned or federally supported facilities, lists archaeological sites recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated with archaeological collections recovered from ILARNG facilities. To date, no archaeological or historic properties are known for Camp Lincoln or Riverside Maintenance Center. Ninety-nine historic and prehistoric archaeological sites are recorded on Marseilles Training Area. Of these 99 sites, one has been determined by the contractor to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, one is potentially eligible, 92 are not eligible, and no determinations were made for five. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on these ILARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
