US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - North Carolina

Summary

In April 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the Division of Archives and History, North Carolina Office of State Archaeology (NCOSA), the Historic Preservation office, and the North Carolina Army National Guard (NCARNG) Headquarters in Raleigh to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on federally owned or federally supported Army National Guard facilities in the state. Information from this research includes the history of cultural investigations on NCARNG facilities and lists of historic buildings recorded within facility boundaries. Additionally, historic contexts and predictive models are discussed, and a list is provided of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated with archaeological collections recovered from NCARNG facilities. To date, no archaeological surveys have been conducted on Wilmington OMS No. 17 or the North Carolina Military Academy West (NCMA West); however, NCMA West is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the (former) Buncombe County Boys’ Training School. One archaeological site has been identified on the Fort Fisher National Guard Training Center; however, NCARNG only owns the buildings and the Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area owns the land. An agreement should be made to determine who is responsible for cultural resources located on Fort Fisher. Eleven sites have been identified at Camp Butner; however, only nine of those were assigned site numbers and as of the date of the St. Louis District visit, NCOSA had not yet received the site forms for the nine sites.
