US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - Pennsylvania
Summary
In March 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the Pennsylvania Army National Guard (PAARNG) Headquarters in Annville and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in Harrisburg to review and document archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on National Guard facilities in the state. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on federally owned or federally supported PAARNG facilities, lists archaeological archaeological sites and historic standing structures recorded with facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated to archaeological collections recovered from PAARNG facilities. To date, 305 historic properties, including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, isolated finds, and historic standing structures, have been recorded on Fort Indiantown Gap. Cultural resource work has not been performed at East Stroudsburg Training Site, nor have any cultural properties been recorded on these facilities. No cultural properties located on PAARNG facilities have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but at Fort Indiantown Gap, 52 properties have been determined eligible or potentially eligible. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered form work conducted on PAARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
