US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - South Dakota

Summary

In September 1997, St. Louis District personnel visited the South Dakota Army National Guard (SDARNG) Headquarters and the South Dakota Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on National Guard facilities in the state. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on federally owned or federally supported SDARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites and historic buildings recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated to archaeological collections recovered from SDARNG facilities. To date, three archaeological sites have been recorded on West Camp Rapid. These are the only sites recorded for the SDARNG facilities investigated. No cultural properties are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Approximately 70 new and previously recorded sites are known for lands used for training and bivouac sites not on SDARNG facilities. The extend, nature and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on SDARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
