Archaeological Monitoring and Data Recovery, Underground Storage Tanks Removal, Bellows Air Force Station, Waimanalo, O'ahu, Hawai'i
Author(s): Conrad Erkelens
Year: 2000
Summary
This archaeological monitoring and data recovery investigation was completed by International Archaeological Research Institute, Inc. (IARII) at buildings #P701 and #P703 on Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS). Five underground storage tanks (UST), which had contained diesel generator fuel, were removed from those locations. The project area is within the boundary of Site no. 50-80-15-4851. Archaeological monitoring and data recovery associated with the removal operation were undertaken as part of hits work. Monitoring revealed a charcoal stained layer in the south wall of Trench 2. Data recovery sampling of this deposit was undertaken on June 27 and 28. Findings indicate that this layer includes a portion of an intact pre-contact Hawaiian habitation deposit. There is a high probability for the presence of additional significant archaeological deposits in the general area, all part of the extensive Hawaiian occupation of Site 4851.
