Wo sind die Retorten? Gedanken zur allotherment Herstellung von Birkenpech

Author(s): Andreas Kurzweil; Jürgen Weiner

Year: 2013

Summary

There is proof that birch pitch has already been used 200 000 years ago. Its basic production method was tangible only since historical times, but deeper knowledge concerning the transformation of birch bark into pitch is still missing. Until now Experimental Archaeology showed that it was possible to produce birch pitch by autothermal processing. In the present paper a method of birch pitch production is proposed by employing allothermal processing in combination with the use of (one way) retorts of organic material.
