Römische Schnellbauweise im Experiment: Die Contubernia auf dem Legionärspfad in Windisch

Author(s): Christian Maise

Year: 2013

Summary

Vindonissa (Windisch, CH) was the only roman legions' camp in today's Switzerland. 5000 to 6000 legionaries lived here from 14 to 101 AD. Since 2009 the archaeological sites and reconstructions form the "Legionärspfad" (the legionary's path). One of the main attractions are the Contubernia, the roman military barracks, that are reconstructed authentically - without modern elements like concrete foundations, woodscrews or rainproof paints. Visitors can enter the legionaries' rooms, the fabrica with the big flour mill and the conturion's house, they even can stay overnight in the legionaries' beds. However, the contubernia are not only a tourist attraction. At the same time they are "Switzerland's biggest archaeological experiment", that, several years from now will teach us a lot about the life period of roman wooden buildings.
