An Archaeological Survey of 200 Acres Near Ray and Hawes Roads, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Douglas R. Mitchell
Year: 1993
Summary
This report details the results of a cultural resources assessment of a 200 acre parcel of private land at the request of The Pollack/Ramras Companies. The parcel was examined for the presence of cultural resources by archaeologists Douglas R. Mitchell and Robert G. Haynes-Peterson, between August 24 and 31, 1993. The project was conducted in compliance with City of Mesa planning and zoning, which stipulates that a cultural resources inventory and assessment be implemented on land which is proposed for rezoning if it occurs in an area where the probability of cultural resources is high, as outlined by the City of Mesa and the Arizona State Historic Preservation Office.
The area surveyed is located in T 1S, R7E in the southeast quarter of Section 20 (40 acres) and the southwest quarter of Section 21 (160 acres). A total of 200 acres was examined. The parcel is located west of the General Motors Desert Proving Ground and immediately north of Williams Air Force Base. It is at the intersection of the projected extensions of Ray Road and Hawes Road (Figure 1).
One site and eighteen isolated occurrences (IOs) were recorded. The site, AZ U:10:74 (ASM), is not considered to contain information that would make it eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Neither are the IOs considered to be significant. Therefore, it is recommended that no further archaeological work be conducted within the parcel and that the project proceed.
