Summary
At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (Corps), John Milner Associates, Inc., (JMA) conducted National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 archaeological compliance surveys on Corps fee-title land in the Norfolk District's Dismal Swamp Canal Project Area in Chesapeake City, VA, and Camden County, NC.
JMA tested 121,995 linear ft. along the banks of the canal and an additional 48 acres across 5 locations specified by the Norfolk District. Field investigations identified 5 sites in NC and 15 sites in VA. These include 18 historic sites and 2 multicomponent sites with both historic and prehistoric components.
Investigations also were conducted at 1 previously identified site in VA. A building assessment of the Dismal Swamp Canal Company's Toll House recommends that further documentation and structural stabilization be undertaken. This ARRA funded Task Order employed 34 specialists.
