American Recovery and Reinvestment Act 2009 Section 110 Compliance Report for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, NHPA, Cultural Resources Investigations, Technical Report No. 5, (Volume 6): Archeological Investigations at South Rock, Cooke’s Island Village of Whitehall, Washington County, New York, Vol. 6

Summary

JMA conducted archeological investigations at South Rock, Cooke's Island, located in the Narrows of Lake Champlain in the Village of Whitehall, New York, on behalf of the USACOE-New York District. JMA’s investigation consisted of Phase I survey of seven acres of South Rock and Phase II evaluations of two previously identified historic foundations.

JMA excavated 118 shovel tests and 15 1m x 1m excavation units from which a total of 3,126 artifacts were recovered. JMA's survey work identified foundation remains of structures associated with the late 19th century W. Cook and Son Planing Mill. JMA's survey work also identified a ca. 1812 rectangular-shaped earthwork that was constructed on top of South Rock in the center of a prehistoric lithic quarry/reductions site. It is JMA’s opinion that South Rock is a prehistoric lithic quarry site, with numerous loci of prehistoric occupation and utilization of the lithic resource.
