Summary
Archaeological Inventory and Assessment of the Foster Joseph Sayers Lake Shoreline, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (Corps), John Milner Associates, Inc. (JMA) conducted National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 archeological compliance surveys on Corps fee-title land at the Baltimore District's Foster Joseph Sayers Lake in Centre County, PA. JMA conducted a Phase I surface reconnaissance survey of the 1100-acre draw-down zone of the Sayers reservoir in order to identify and assess the integrity of archaeological sites in this area; the draw-down zone is subject to mild to severe erosion and disturbance during the draw-down process.
Twenty-five sites were identified (19 historic, 1 prehistoric, 3 both, 2 locations but no artifacts). No artifacts were collected during the survey but in situ artifacts and features were photographed and recorded. Regarding site integrity, it was found that all sites had undergone variables amounts of erosional disturbance.
