Summary
At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District (Corps), John Milner Associates, Inc., (JMA) conducted National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 archaeological compliance surveys on Corps fee-title land on 121 acres at Carlyle Lake, Clinton County, Illinois.
The Phase I survey consisted of limited pedestrian survey and intensive shovel-test survey. Field investigations identified 12 archeological sites (10 new sites and 2 previously recorded sites) and 11 isolated finds.
The 12 recorded archeological sites include four prehistoric sites (11CT526, 11CT527, 11CT530, and 11CT531), two historic sites (11CT528 and 11CT532), and the remaining six sites (11CT55, 11CT87, 11CT523, 11CT524, 11CT525, and 11CT529) produced both prehistoric and historic artifacts. This ARRA funded Task Order employed 51 specialists.
