Hunting the Hunters: Archaeological Testing at CA-RIV-653 and CA-RIV-1098, Riverside County, California
Author(s): Donn R. Grenda; Deborah W. Gray
Year: 1997
Summary
TThis report presents the results of testing at archaeological sites CA-RIV-653/H and CA-RIV-1098, historic properties eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These are 2 of 22 prehistoric archaeological sites in the Prado Flood Control Basin, Riverside County, California. RIV-653 is a multicomponent site, noteworthy both for its prehistoric component and its historical-period component, the Bandini Cota adobe. RIV-1098 is directly east of RIV-653; the 2 sites are separated only by a road and structures, which create the modem site boundaries. Both sites were tested by Langenwalter and Brock (1985), who suggested they represent a Middle-period village (RIV-653) and a seed processing site (RIV-1098). In 1988, Goldberg and Arnold evaluated the 22 known sites to help create the Prado Basin Archaeological District and concluded that both sites had sufficient integrity to be included as contributing elements. This report explains the strategy, methods, and rationale used to guide the boundary testing and evaluation process and presents the results and interpretations of the project. Although the sites were not officially determined to be eligible for placement on the NRHP, initial testing demonstrated that they had the potential to address a series of research questions.
