Summary

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District archaeological collections were brought to the Veterans Curation Program’s (VCP) Augusta laboratory in February 2013. The Augusta VCP laboratory is a USACE, St. Louis District’s Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections program, which is staffed through New South Associates, Inc., an archaeological contract firm located in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

The procedures employed to sort and re-house the archaeological material from the Millers Ferry 1963-1968 investigation are discussed below and follow the standard protocols utilized by the Augusta VCP laboratory. In the re-housing process of each investigative effort of the USACE, Mobile District collection, the same standard procedures and Office of Archaeological Research (OAR) guidelines were followed. Upon completion of the curation management project, the collection was sent to the University of Alabama, OAR for permanent curation. Additional information regarding this collection can be found in the associated Millers Ferry 1963-1968 archives collection which is currently housed at OAR in Moundville, Alabama.
