Summary

The following report discusses the archaeomagnetic results for 9 samples from burned features in sites AZ AA:2:131(ASM), AZ U:10:2(ASM), and AZ U:10:176(ASM) (Table 1) from the Santan Pipeline Data Recovery Project. Portions of this report have been used in other reports from the Colorado State University Archaeometric Lab, and they are included here for the convenience of the reader; by including these portions this report stands alone with only minimal reference to other work produced in the lab.

The analysis provided by the Colorado State University Archaeometric Laboratory includes measurement of a sample's magnetic remanence in the pristine condition (referred to as natural remanent maqnetization - NRM) and in a series of "demagnetization steps" undertaken to establish the sample’s primary direction of magnetization (declination and inclination) and resulting virtual geomagnetic pole position (VGP). A Schonstedt spinner magnetometer is employed for specimen measurement and an alternating current (AC) demagnetizer is used for the demagnetization. The processing of each sample is unique because of the individual qualities of each sample, but it follows general guidelines established by laboratory personnel from previous tests and experiments.
