Cultural Resources Survey for the SRP Pinal West Substation, North of Haley Hills, Pinal County, Arizona

Author(s): T. Kathleen Henderson

Year: 2005

Summary

This report presents the results of a Class III cultural resources survey of 60 acres of privately owned land on the flats north of Haley Hills, Pinal County, Arizona. The work was requested by Salt River Project (SRP) to determine if significant cultural resources were present within the surveyed property. SRP recently purchased the land and is planning to construct an electrical substation (Pinal West) on the property. The Pinal West Substation will be part of the proposed Palo Verde to Pinal West 500 kV Transmission Line project. SRP indicates that all federal and state lands that may be affected by this project have been surveyed (Class III); the survey of private land is pending. This report will be included as part of compliance documentation for the larger transmission project (see NEPA Environmental Assessment No. BLM EA AZ-020-2003-0045; Arizona Corporation Commission Certificate of Environmental Compatibility Case No. 124; Docket No. L00000B-03-0124; SHPO File No. SHPO-2003-0184 [19089]). The cultural resources survey was conducted on 13 May 2005, by Dr. Kathy Henderson and Tiffany Clark of Desert Archaeology, Inc. Dr. Henderson also served as Principal Investigator for the project. Although the surveyed land is private and no archaeological permit is required, Desert Archaeology does hold a current Arizona Antiquities blanket permit (Permit No. 2005-007bl) for conducting non-collection surveys within the state. Two isolated occurrences of prehistoric artifacts were recorded by the survey, but no archaeological sites or other significant cultural resources were found.
