Summary
The Veterans Curation Program utilizes the standard archival practice of unique naming of collections. The purpose of this practice is to avoid redundant and confusing collection names commonly found with archaeological investigations. Therefore, this collection is referred to as "OAR Projects Progress Reports 1968-1972.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is two (2) linear inches.
The progress reports were originally housed in the same acidic banker’s box as the photographic materials from the Millers Ferry 1963-1968 document collection. It was evident that these materials were administrative in nature and not part of the Millers Ferry document collection. The progress reports cover the period of January 1968 until March 1969. Because there were numerous subject properties, this was noted on the folders as “Various Subject Properties.” The contractor was listed as University of Alabama.
Metal contaminants in the form of staples and paper clips were removed from the document collection. The metal binging from one report was removed. Once these were removed, the various progress reports were divided by blank sheets of acid-free paper to keep the different assets separate. Creases were flattened, and a few tears were repaired using tissue mending tape. Some of the records were on thin, onion skin paper, which were treated with extra care.
There were no photographic or oversized materials removed from this document collection. A progress report, entitled Archaeological Highway Salvage Investigations in Morgan County, Alabama, had two images affixed with adhesive to the last page of the report. Due to age, the images were separating from the page. The two images were removed and stored in a 4-mil plastic bag. These were placed at the back of the folder.
