Summary
This collection is referred to as the “Walter F. George River Basin Survey 1960-1971 investigation.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is a quarter (0.25) of a linear inch.
The majority of the documents from this collection date from 1960 to 1971, which explains the date range in the investigation name. However, there is one document that has a date range from 1960 to1976, which is an oversized map that appears to show a site area with dates of previous investigations.
This collection arrived to the facility in two 13” by 18” UPS Express mailing boxes and one 6” by 38” UPS Express mailing tube. The documents, consisting primarily of oversized paper and photographic materials, were rolled or folded into the containers. Due to the manner in which the documents were stored within the transportation containers, some damage was sustained to the documents. The documents were badly creased, and in some cases, torn. Metal contaminants, including staples, were present throughout the collection, and were removed. Photographic materials were cleaned with PEC-Pads. Surface dirt and stray pencil markings were present as well, and were removed with white vinyl and vulcanized rubber erasers. Acidic pressure-sensitive tape was removed with a tape-removal spatula and replaced with acid-free mending tissue tape, where needed. A bone tool was used to flatten both legal-sized paper documents and oversized paper documents that had been rolled. Some of the excessively rolled documents required humidification to flatten them completely.
Due to the lack of a final report, it was impossible to determine the context of the documents within the investigation. Therefore, record series were assigned based solely on document content. Scanned asset 0118_0002 appeared to be a figure that was used in a final report and had the term “figure” located at the bottom of the document. Though no final report was present in the collection, this document was still assigned into the report record series. Since the collection included mostly oversized materials, an Oversized Records Series was created and utilized for the majority of the collection.
