Finding Aid, Banister Allen Plantation (38AB102) and Clinkscales Farm (38AB221) Data Recovery 1977-1986

Summary

This collection is referred to as "Banister Allen Plantation (38AB102) and Thomas B. Clinkscales Farm (38AB221) 1977.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this investigation is five (5) linear inches.

The documents date from 1977-1990. The investigation occurred primarily in 1980, but background information found with the collection dates to 1977. This collection was originally housed in acidic folders in an acidic cardboard box with other collections from the Richard B. Russell Multiple Resource Area. The documents were in good condition, though metal contaminants and folds were found throughout the collection. The metal contaminants were removed and the folds were smoothed. The documents were originally lacking a discernible order. Scanned asset #2024-0025, a field notebook, was placed in a 6” x 6”, 4-mil. bag during processing. This was done, as the asset is unbound and contains various sized pieces of paper, and handling of the document could result in the loss of pages.

The final report entitled “The Banister Allen Plantation and Thomas B. Clinkscales Farm: Data Recovery in the Richard B. Russell Multiple Resource Area, Abbeville County, South Carolina” was found online on Georgia’s Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources Geographic Information System, (www.gnahrgis.org). The Georgia Archaeological Site File Report Number for the final report is 694. Digital copies of the files were downloaded from the website and saved as part of the digital collection, and the final report was also printed on acid-free paper. The final report was assigned an asset number, and the printed copy of the final report was inserted into Report Records folders (Folder 16/1).

The collection contained five oversized maps from the investigation area that required flattening and smoothing. The documents were placed in the oversized storage.

The collection contained various photographic records from the field records. The materials included photographic negatives, prints, and slides. The photographs were assigned to a folder, (Folder 11/1) and the materials were removed for permanent storage in an archival binder.
