Year: 2011

Summary

The purpose of this project is to inventory and evaluate the historic landscapes at both Randolph AFB and Maxwell AFB. First, a historic landscape context for each base will be developed. Second, an inventory of all landscapes and landscape features for each base will be completed. Third, these landscapes and features for each base will be evaluated according to the methods established in Guidelines for Identifying and Evaluating Historic Military Landscapes (ERDC-CERL, 2009) and their significance and integrity determined for inclusion on the NRHP. Photographic and historic documentation will be completed for any significant landscapes. Lastly, general management recommendations will be provided to help preserve and/or protect these resources in the future. These management recommendations are intended to help each base preserve the landscape character in historically significant areas as well as provide a list of appropriate and/or sustainable regional plant material. Recommendations will include a large scale street tree planting plan historic districts highlighting large open areas such as parade fields and parking lots as well smaller areas like screening for mechanical yards and equipment. Smaller scale planting plans will be completed for administration buildings for which historic documentation exists (for example, Headquarters, chapel, hospital, BOQ, theater, and barracks). In addition, planting plans for each housing style will be completed. These management recommendations will serve as a guide for Cultural Resources and other interested parties.
