Summary Report of Archaeological Survey of Surface Stockpile Areas, Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base, Burlington County, New Jersey

Summary

A Phase IB survey of eleven temporary surface stockpile areas was undertaken at Fort Dix in July, August and October 1992. The temporary surface stockpile areas will be used for the short-term storage of materials during construction of the tertiary wastewater treatment system. Following review of field data during the preparation of this report, the accounts presented here have not been substantially modified from the reports submitted to the Philadelphia District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on August 20 and October 7, 1992. This report was originally included as an Appendix to the draft report Archaeological Data Recovery at the Cherry Valley Tavern/Pointville Hotel Site (28-Bu-413), submitted to the Philadelphia district, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, September 1993, but is now submitted as a separate document. It should be read with reference to Hunter Research, Inc 1992: Cultural Resource Survey for the Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base Tertiary Wastewater Treatment Facility, of which these studies form a part. The background data required by New Jersey Pinelands Commission is included in the latter report and is not repeated here. Each area was then inspected in order to assess the degree of disturbance and potential for historic and prehistoric resources. With the exception of Area 7, at the junction of Texas Avenue and Pemberton Road, the areas are all heavily disturbed by 20th century landscaping and cut-and-fill operations. In many instances subsurface testing was considered to be unjustified.

This resource was originally completed in September 1993 but was revised in May 1994.
