Year: 2009

Summary

This report documents a Phase I intensive archaeological investigation at the Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) Lakehurst located in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Phase I survey was conducted for the associated with a proposed action to provide a complete and usable paved roadway for military ground vehicles conducting missions at NAES Lakehurst including vehicles that may be coming from Fort Dix Army Base and McGuire Air Force Base (AFB).

The survey at the NAES was conducted to identify prehistoric and historic archaeological resources, to document architectural resources, and provide recommendations for managing any identified resources. In order to do this, the entire installation was examined for known sites and areas of prior disturbance.

Shovel Test Pits (STPs) were excavated in the areas considered to have high archaeological sensitivity. In total, 63 STPs were excavated at NAES Lakehurst. No prehistoric or historic artifacts were recovered in any of the STPs excavated. No further archaeological testing is recommended for Alternative 1.
