Author(s): Jonathan F. Ruhan; Stephen J. Najjar

Year: 2008

Summary

The New Boston Air Force Station (NBAFS) Integrated Cultural Resource Management Plan (ICRMP) provides guidance and assigns responsibility for management of cultural resources located on NBAFS in support of the Station mission. This plan addresses identification and protection of archaeological sites located at NBAFS. Currently no Native American Traditional Cultural Properties (TCPs) are known at NBAFS; however, in the event they are identified at the facility, the ICRMP outlines procedures necessary to manage them in accordance to the standards specified by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the New Hampshire State Historic Preservation Office. These standards are based on numerous federal laws and executive orders. In addition, Air Force implementation for the NBAFS ICRMP is provided under Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force directives, instructions, and Memoranda of Agreement.

The implementation of this ICRMP is to provide the framework for future preservation and mitigation efforts of NBAFS cultural resources while meeting the mission related goals for the development of the Station. The goal of any ICRMP is to balance the preservation of the cultural resources with the reality of the installation's mission requirements. This difficult balancing act can only be achieved through the continued commitment of the Station to encourage review and improvements to the ICRMP every five years. The support of the ICRMP, while meeting all legal requirements, will ensure the future preservation and management of NBAFS's unique and non-renewable cultural resources and enable the mission of the Station to be fulfilled.
