Summary

In July of 2011, Westover Air Reserve Base (ARB) submitted to The Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) a Determination of Eligibility (DOE) for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for the base's historic resources (i.e. buildings, structures, and landscape features over 50 years of age). This DOE revised a previous survey of the base conducted in 1995. In the revised DOE, Westover ARB concluded that the base did not constitute a historic district as previously determined by the 1995 report, and that any further district potential had been diminished due to a series of demolitions, new construction, and adverse treatments. A significant number of contributing resources (20 of 39) had been demolished since the 1995 report. The infiltration of many new buildings and features to the base eclipsed many of the remaining historic resources. And finally, the cumulative effects of adverse treatments over the past 17 years had dramatically diminished historic integrity. The SHPO responded with a request for additional information prior to concurrence with the Base's findings.
