Summary

This archaeological survey report describes Phase II (preliminary site examination) investigations on a portion of prehistoric site 18-PR-438 affected by the proposed Adelphi Microwave Facility at the Army Research Laboratory, Adelphi Laboratory Center in Montgomery and Prince George’s County, Maryland. The work was undertaken to evaluate the eligibility of the site under Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as Amended through 1992, and to determine the effect of the impact of the proposed project.

Previous Phase I work had demonstrated the existence of the site. The present study consisted of the placement of 85 shovel tests on a regular grid in the project impact area, supplemented by the excavation of two five-foot-square test units in areas of higher artifact density. The investigations recovered fewer than 300 prehistoric artifacts. The soil profile appeared to have been truncated prior to the present secondary woodland growth, assessed to be about 40 years old.

Analysis of the excavated material in its local and regional context suggested that the site was probably a short-term procurement site at which locally-available lithic sources of quartz and quartzite pebbles were expediently exploited. A small number of other tools, thermally-fractured rock and debitage suggest that food processing and the curation of lithic artifacts also took place. Because of the lack of stratigraphic integrity of the site, the lack of diagnostic artifacts, and the low intensity of the occupation, it is concluded that the site is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
