Summary

In June 1999, PAL completed an intensive (locational) archaeological survey of the FAMCAMP project area, which is located adjacent to Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts. The U.S. Air Force is proposing improvements to the Family Camp, a 25-acre parcel located north of the main base property and runways.

Background research indicated that known prehistoric sites are located in the vicinity of the project area near Elm Brook and an area south of Hanscom AFB along a watershed between the Shawsheen and Charles River drainages. Historic/modem period land use in the vicinity of the project area was primarily agricultural/pastoral in nature with scattered farmsteads. Modem period standing structures in the project area (Buildings T214, T804) used for recreational purposes had been evaluated in a previous study. The FAMCAMP project area had the potential to contain both prehistoric and historic period cultural resources. A walkover inspection was used to delineate zones of archaeological sensitivity. Most of the project area was found to have high and moderate sensitivity for Native American and EuroAmerican cultural resources. Sections of the project area with low archaeological sensitivity were poorly drained or had been previously disturbed. Subsurface testing was conducted in sections of the project area with high and moderate archaeological sensitivity to locate and identify any potentially significant archaeological resources. No archaeological sites were identified in the project area. No further archaeological investigation of the Hanscom AFB FAMCAMP facility is recommended.
