National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination Form: Hanover Furnace (Revised) [Draft]
Author(s): Louis Berger & Associates
Year: 1984
Summary
This is a revised nomination form for the Hanover Furnace historic site. Hanover Furnace is located on the North Branch of the Rancocas Creek within the Fort Dix military reservation. The form summarizes the history of the industrial town and notes that no extant structures mark the town’s location. Key archaeological features identified include: the bramble-covered iron master's house site; a pile of rubble representing the furnace, and dead-end roads. Hanover Furnace dates from the post-revolutionary eighteenth century and contained an iron furnace, iron master's house, workers houses, and a sawmill. The adjacent pine woods and swamps supplied the ore and fuel (charcoal) for the production of cast iron. The furnace supported a community of over 200 people and lasted until the raw materials were depleted in the 1840's. This revised form includes a narrative boundary description, a location map depicting surface features associated with the archaeological site, and revised topographic maps showing historic property boundaries.
