Summary

A cultural resources survey was undertaken in February 2001 on cellular tower site PRI 68-PHI FTDIX in Pemberton Township, Burlington County, located within the Fort Dix Military Reservation. The survey was conducted by Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. (Cranbury, New Jersey) for Adams, Rehmann & Heggan Associates, Inc (Hammonton, New Jersey) as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the Pinelands Commission. The Area of Potential Effect (APE), was a 10,000 square foot area to be used for a stone pad to support the cellular tower. The proposed construction is a 100 foot by 100 foot stone pad site, a 180 foot to 200 foot lattice-type steel tower, and a 400 square foot unmanned support building at the tower base.

The purpose of the survey was to determine whether any significant prehistoric or historic cultural resources were present in the APE. The field testing phase was preceded by a thorough review of the historical literature and other cultural resources surveys conducted in the surrounding area. The results of the research suggested a moderate to high potential for uncovering significant prehistoric cultural resources.

An inspection of the APE revealed no visible artifacts or features on the surface. A grid was established and nine shovel tests were excavated. Subsurface testing uncovered no evidence of prehistoric or historic cultural remains. The results of the cultural resources survey indicate that no significant cultural resources will be impacted by this project. Further investigation is not recommended.
