Phase IV to VII Architectural Investigation Thirteen World War II-Era Buildings, Fort Dix Military Installation, Burlington County, New Jersey

Author(s): Douglas C. McVarish

Year: 2001

Summary

This project is an architectural investigation of 13 buildings (Buildings 3505, 3506, 3507, 3508, 3509, 3510, 3511, 3512, 3513, 3519, 3521, 3522, and 3555) located on the Fort Dix Military Installation in Burlington County, New Jersey. Due to lack of foreseeable need for most of these buildings, the U.S. Army proposes to demolish 12 of them. The remaining building, 3555, will be converted to a new use. In accordance with regulations concerning the protection of cultural resources on the installation, the U.S. Army has contracted to document these buildings prior to their demolition or alteration. John Milner Associates, Inc. (JMA) was subcontracted by Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation, prime contractor to Fort Dix, to examine the 13 buildings and to make recommendations concerning their eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

None of the buildings surveyed is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places or for Pinelands Designation. Each is a standard Army design used at many installations throughout the United States in the World War II period. Each lacks architectural significance. In addition, none of the buildings played a significant role in the military or civilian history of the United States, nor did any play significant roles in the history of Fort Dix or Burlington County. As none of these buildings is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places or for Pinelands Designation, no further documentation of the buildings is recommended. Demolition or alteration may proceed.
