Summary
The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) was tasked to conduct research for Army installation personnel at Fort Dix, New Jersey, that will contribute to their compliance with the requirements of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (25 U.S.C.3001-3013 (NAGPRA) and its implementing regulations 43 C.F.R. Part 10. Specifically, USACERL was tasked to review all pertinent information on cultural affiliation for future archaeological materials discovered on Army-owned lands at Fort Dix to identify the federally recognized Indian tribe/s most likely culturally affiliated with the human remains and associated funerary objects, and to facilitate consultations with Native Americans regarding the repatriation of these remains and funerary objects. This report conveys the results of cultural affiliation overview research completed to assist Fort Dix in complying with Section 3 requirements of NAGPRA should archaeological materials affiliated with contemporary Indian tribes be encountered in the future.
This report provides the cultural resources manager at Fort Dix with an overview and bibliography of the prehistoric and historic Native American presence along the middle Atlantic seaboard, and specifically in the vicinity of Fort Dix, New Jersey. The purpose of this report is (1) to give the cultural resource manager sufficient information to make informed decisions about choosing present-day Indian tribes to consult concerning the custody of human remains, and funerary objects, either inadvertently discovered or recovered in planned archaeological research, and (2) to provide a resource for the evaluation of the legitimacy of potential claims by Indian tribes- to human remains and cultural objects pursuant to NAGPRA.
