Summary
The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) completed a research study Fort Dix to contribute to their compliance with the requirements of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and its implementing regulations 43 C.F.R. Part 10. This report conveys the results of cultural affiliation overview research completed to assist Fort Dix in complying with Section 3 requirements of NAGPRA should archaeological materials affiliated with contemporary Indian tribes be encountered in the future.
The report summarizes the prehistoric and historic Native American presence along the middle Atlantic seaboard, and specifically in the vicinity of Fort Dix, New Jersey. Based on available archaeological, ethnological, historical, and linguistic evidence, the report identifies the Delaware as culturally affiliated with any NAGPRA related human remains and cultural items associated with historic Native American settlements and prehistoric occupations of the Late Woodland period in the Fort Dix area. The report noted that traditional creation myths indicate that the Delaware people always resided in their ancestral homeland in the middle Atlantic region. The report recommended consultation with three federally recognized tribes: the Delaware Nation, the Delaware Tribe, and the Stockbridge-Munsee.
