Summary

A basic data report for the Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties Archeological Site Survey at site 18MO393. At the mouth of Hillendale Run, located to the east, is at the Fall Line, at the interface of the Eastern Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. A low, narrow terrace lies north of the left bank of Hillendale Run near the top of a steep slope. The terrace measures 125' long by 40' wide and is bounded by a slope on the north, a drainage channel to the east, and Hillendale Run on the south.

A total of eight prehistoric artifacts were collected from five of the eight shovel test pits and the test unit placed across this low terrace. Quartz flakes total five of the finds. The remaining artifacts include two quartzite flakes and one rhyolite flake. A total of 15 historic artifacts were collected from three of the shovel test pits and the unit. White earthenware sherds total nine of the finds. Three sherds may be creamware sherds. The remaining artifacts include one red earthenware glazed sherd, one red tile fragment, one white clay pipe bowl fragment, one thin white-salt glazed stoneware sherd, one brown glass sherd, and one white glass sherd. The red clay tile fragment was recovered from a depth of 50cm. One whiteware body sherd was recovered from 30-40cm deep. The remaining artifacts were recovered from a range of 0-30cm in depth. Most of the artifacts were collected in mixed and scattered contexts. Whether the historic artifacts are in their original context or represent secondary deposition was not determined.
