Summary

This report is a Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties Archeological Site Survey, Basic Data Report for the site W-T, CH-K4, 18CH163. This site is located approximately 400m north of Upper Cedar Point on the north bank of the Potomac River. It is immediately north of site 18CH162, and is separated from it by a low marshy swale, probably the locus of a freshwater spring.

Bounded on the east by the Potomac River, which is eroding the approximately 740 feet long eastern site margin, the site covers approximately 8 acres and reaches a thickness of at least 15". The midden is composed exclusively of densely packed whole valves of C. Virginica. The surface of the site has been plowed.

The site in question is immediately north of site 18CH162, and may be a continuation of it, and separated by a low marshy swale. The site is bounded on the east by the Potomac River, which is eroding the approximately 740 feet long eastern site margin. The site covers approximately 8 acres and reaches a thickness of at least 15". The midden is composed exclusively of densely packed whole valves of C. Virginica. The surface of the site has been plowed. Radiocarbon dates from this site were: 1615 +/- 75 BP, 1300 +/- 100 BP, and 2740 +/- 75 BP. The last date may indicate an Early Woodland component, if it is accurate.
