Finding Aid, Little River-Buffalo Creek Special Land Disposal Tract 1983

Summary

This collection is referred to as “Little River-Buffalo Creek Special Land Disposal Tract 1983.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection measures twelve (12.0) linear inches.

The investigation was originally stored in an acidic cardboard box sealed with tape with other investigations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, Strom Thurmond Lake subject property. Field and analysis forms, site maps and drawings, field notebooks, photographic prints and negatives, nomination forms for the National Register of Historic Places, documents associated with background research, and report drafts are included in the collection. The final report was located through inter-library loan. The report was transferred digitally to the VCP laboratory, printed on acid-free paper, and added to the collection. The final report is titled “An Archaeological Study of the Little River-Buffalo Creek Special Land Disposal Tract” and contains a single volume designated “Volume I.” No additional volumes were located.

The collection arrived in good overall condition and required minimal cleaning and mending. Any wrinkles were smoothed using a bone tool and minor tears were mended with acid-free tissue mending tape. Six oversized maps are included in the document collection. These documents were removed to oversized storage, scanned, and assigned separate scanned asset numbers for tracking purposes. Unbound field notebooks (Folders 3/1, 4/1, and 5/1) were placed in archival plastic bags to keep documents separated. Each plastic bag was punctured to prevent the development of a microclimate.

The original order of the photographic material (prints and negatives) was maintained. Descriptions of the content of the photographs were included on the back of the photographs along with the associated negative number. Scanned asset descriptions for photographs are derived from the descriptions provided on the back of the photographs. The date for each photograph was derived from the entry on the photographic inventory (scanned asset 2025_0053), which corresponds with the negative number and image description provided on the back of the photographs. In several instances, the site number included on the photo board within the photograph differed from the site number included on the label on the back of the photograph. When the accurate site number could be determined based on the content of the photograph and by referencing the photographic inventory, only the accurate site number was included in the scanned asset key. If the accurate site number could not be determined, all site numbers were included in the database entry for that scanned asset. In addition, site numbers 38MC70, 38MC74, 38MC75, and 38MC78 were identified in the photographs and are recorded in the scanned asset key and initial data collection sheet; however, these site numbers were not included in the final report. It is unclear if incorrect site numbers were reported or if additional material not associated with the final report is included in this document collection. All photographic material was removed to photographic storage, scanned, and assigned separate scanned asset numbers for tracking purposes.

Throughout the collection, sites are referred to by both temporary site numbers and Smithsonian trinomial site numbers. Table 1 of the final report (scanned asset 2025-0051) provides the Smithsonian trinomial site numbers and their associated temporary site numbers. When the temporary site number was provided within a document or photograph, the temporary site number was included in the Provenience field and the corresponding trinomial site number was included in the Site # field of the Scanned Asset Key in the database.
