Architectural Assessment, Building 610, Infantry Post, Fort Sam Houston Military Reservation, Texas
Part of the 2005 Condition Studies for Various Properties, Fort Sam Houston project
Author(s): Joe C. Freeman

Summary
An architectural assessment of Building 610 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Included is the structure's description, significance, and character-defining features, as well as a condition summary, and general assessment of building condition and integrity.
Building 610 is one of a series of interconnected barracks known as the Long Barracks (Building Nos. 603–610, 613). The Long Barracks extends the entirety of the east end of the parade ground in the historic Infantry Post and is a major contributing element of the Fort Sam Houston National Historic Landmark District. As a consequence of its historical significance, large footprint (combined with the other sections of barracks), efficient arrangement for egress, and sound structural condition, it is recommended that Building 610 be considered a good candidate for reuse. Rehabilitation costs for this property are not expected to exceed new construction costs (which is typically around $243 per square foot for new administrative facilities at Fort Sam Houston) for a similar size facility.
