Finding Aid, Four Disposal Areas, Three Water-Control Structures and a Portion of the Tallahatchie River

Summary

The MCX-CMAC utilizes the standard archival practice of unique naming of collections. The purpose of this is to avoid redundant and confusing collection names commonly found with archaeological investigations. Therefore, this collection is referred to as "Four Disposal Areas, Three Water-Control Structures and a Portion of the Tallahatchie River.” This naming practice is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folder titles, and box labels. The linear extent of this collection is one (1) inch.

Only seven folders compose this collection. All field and catalog records were duplicated according to the Cobb Institute’s requirements. The copies were also packaged in acid-free folders and labeled identically to the original folders, with the exception of a notation indicating that the folder contains copies. These copies are stored separately from the originals.

The report for this collection was submitted in 1991, thus signaling the end of this project. However, in 1993, when the dredging activities that necessitated the 1991 survey were carried out, the avoidance of an identified site pushed the activities into an area that held a site that contained both artifacts and burials. Work was halted when a crew from the University of Mississippi that had been surveying the area discovered the damage. Representatives from Coastal Environment came to the site to assess the damage. This work is represented by a small amount of material from early 1993.
