The Cold War in South Carolina, 1945-1991: An Inventory of Department of Defense Cold War Era Cultural and Historical Resources in the State of South Carolina, Final Report, Volume II, Part A

Summary

This report discusses the history of the Cold war and potential properties associated with this era in South Carolina. The Charleston Naval Base (CNB) complex was the largest and most involved DoD installation surveyed due to the multitude of activities that occurred at three separate locations. The USC Legacy Project conducted two building surveys of the CNB complex, one that focused solely on the base in North Charleston, and another that combined the Naval Weapons Station (NWS) and Polaris Missile Facility, Atlantic (POMFLANT), which are adjoining properties near Goose Creek. The surveys were arranged separately with the help of contacts at the CNB and the NWS. This volume contains a report for the three locations and a set of recommendations.
