Phase I Cultural Resource Inventory for Proposed Cedar Peak Wildland Fire Management Project, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada Test And Training Range, Nye County, Nevada
Author(s): Diane L. Winslow; Rebecca Halbmaier
Year: 2013
Summary
The United States Air Force, 99th Civil Engineering Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base (NAFB), Nevada is proposing fuels reduction for Cedar Peak located on the north range of the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). The protection of Cedar Peak from the effects of a wildland fire will require the clear cutting of the pinyon and juniper trees within an approximate 300-foot radius around the peak (approximately 30 acres), and an additional 900-foot radius around the clear cut area (approximately 85 acres) would be thinned to minimize the fire intensity as it nears the peak. The total footprint for the proposed fuels reduction project would be approximately 115 acres. Lands involved with this project are administered by NAFB, NTTR. This project is collaborative effort with the United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to reduce the potential for wildland fire effects on the NTTR. As the proposed fuels reduction actions are considered a federal undertaking, the project requires compliance with regulations set forth in the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) governing the discovery and treatment of cultural resources.
ASM Affiliates, Inc. (ASM) was contracted by Potomac-Hudson Engineering, Inc. to conduct a Phase I cultural resource inventory to identify cultural resources that are eligible or are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in support of the proposed fuels reduction project. As a result of the Phase I inventory, ASM identified and documented two new cultural resource sites (26NY15170 and 26NY15171) and three isolated occurrences (IO1, IO2, and IO3).
