Summary

URS Corporation, formerly Dames & Moore, under contract to Prewitt & Associates, was selected by Nellis Air Force Base to perform archaeological inventory of an approximate 5,000-acre sample of the Kawich Range. The following report constitutes the third phase of the project, and documents the results of the archaeological survey and an evaluation of a predictive model. Thirty-five sample units were randomly selected for survey within the project area, while six named springs were intuitively selected for inspection. Survey was conducted within three general landscape zones identified as Upper Bajada, Lower Mountain Flank, and Great Basin Montane. Each zone was defined in terms of elevation, reflecting different slope and vegetation patterns. The survey was completed in two field seasons, resulting in the recordation of 157 archaeological sites. Of these, four sites are classified as historic, 18 sites contain evidence of both historic and prehistoric use, and 135 sites are classified as prehistoric. Seven percent of the recorded sites were found within the Upper Bajada landscape unit, 71 percent within the Lower Mountain Flank, and 22 percent within the Great Basin Montane. Overall, findings of the study were consistent with the predictive model, with little evidence of Pre-Archaic or Early Archaic human occupation, and ample evidence of Middle-to-Late Archaic use of the area.
