Summary

This document describes major tasks that utilize multi-disciplinary scientific processes to investigate archaeological and cultural sensitivities on the largest training range in the Air Force with fighter pilot training beginning in the 1950’s. The project is one of two evaluation phases that wIII be concurrently implemented. Part I concentrates geomorphological and archaeological investigations into seven major target construction and use zones, with the results to be subjected to consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The objectives are to define or limit future inventory in high-impact, low-elevation areas that are shown through archaeological survey to have relatively low potential to locate historic properties. Part II, consists of archaeological research in zones not slated for disturbance in support of the target disturbance zone evaluations and wIII also address Section 110 of NHPA that requires federal institutions take efforts to locate and preserve eligible properties on all lands regardless of future plans for disturbance. The two phases compose a novel, holistic-planned event that is likely the largest compliance and scientific endeavor ever undertaken in the Great Basin, or the West.
