Summary

In 2010, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) proposed to install a 10.6 mile (17.1 km) long fiber optic line between the Tolicha Peak Compound and the top of Black Mountain, on the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR), Nye County, Nevada. The proposed route of the fiber optic line coincides with corridors of existing utility lines and other disturbance, as much as possible, to minimize potential effects to the overall environment and to known historic properties. Only a short portion (600 m; 1,968 ft) of the proposed route required survey at that time and no cultural resources were found (Pippin, 2010). The proposed route within the existing corridors of disturbance passed near several historic properties and, the USAF determined those sites should be visited and monitored during construction to assure avoidance The USAF determined the undertaking would have “no adverse effect” on historic properties. Consultation with the SHPO was completed in December, 2010.
