Summary

Cultural resources surveys of six areas on the north and south ranges of Nellis Air Force Base scheduled to be impacted by construction and/or mission related activities. Fourteen previously unrecorded archaeological sites were found during the surveys. Twelve of the sites were isolates or scatters of a few flakes and were collected. The remaining two archaeological sites are considered potentially significant sites and were recorded and mapped. One site at Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary Field (AFAF) is a moderately dense lithic scatter containing all stages in the stone tool reduction sequence. It is located on alluvial sediments to the east of the existing runways. There is also a historic trash dump in a portion of the area surveyed that dates to the 1930s. The second significant site identified is located on Range 62 to the west of Dog Bone Lake. This is interpreted as a lithic toolstone quarry site. The site contains a high density of artifacts and numerous activity areas. These activity areas predominantly represent early stages in the stone tool reduction sequence (quarrying) though two areas within the larger site contain a high percentage of the final stages of stone tool reduction.
