A Guide to the Geology of Stonewall In Support of Nellis AFB Archaeology

Summary

This resource is a guide to the geology of Stonewall Mountain. Conducted by Nellis AFB archaeology, a geological study was completed in the Stonewall Mountain and Stonewall Flat area on the Nevada Test and Training Range. This study is meant to help archaeologists working in that area understand what natural resources were available to the early Native American inhabitants of the region. This geological study also compares the rocks that exist in the Stonewall region with the different types of stone tools found here. It shows which local rock resources were used by the people who lived here or traveled through this area. This new geologic study also shows what the environment was like more than 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. It explains the changes to the landscape that were caused when the climate changed from ice-age to desert conditions 11,000 to 13,000 years ago. The profound changes in climate and environment that have occurred since the last ice age affected how the descendants of those original Native Americans lived on this land. This geological study also helps archaeologists recognize the best places are for preserving archaeological sites from erosion.
