Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Comparative Perspectives on European Colonization in the Americas: Papers in Honor of Réginald Auger" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The imperialistic project of France during the colonial era was based on the strong interdependency between the Métropole and its colonies spread all around the globe. Interestingly, the cultural areas in which Professor Réginald Auger worked during is career allow to take a fresh look to the network of the Atlantic world and to study the role of neglected territories such as French Guiana, the Newfoundland Grand Banks, and Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, on the development and sustainability of the French empire. In this presentation, I will go beyond the well-known East-West commercial network to discuss the intercolonial connections between the North Atlantic French territories and the circumcaribbean ones. By doing so, I want to demonstrate that even marginal colonies have an important role in the organisation of the Atlantic resources production and commerce.
