Applying An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Understanding Of A Semi-subterranean Sod House In Labrador

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Comparative Perspectives on European Colonization in the Americas: Papers in Honor of Réginald Auger" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

As Professor Auger advocated during his career at Université Laval and transmitted to his students over the years, interdisciplinary approaches are fundamental to the development of archeology. Our science already uses and combines different techniques and methods in order to better understand the past, but the most important is to connect with others and keep our minds open to new insights. This approach has helped me during my master’s degree to bring my ideas forward concerning changes, interactions and contacts. The influence of a European presence in Labrador on the daily lives of the inhabitants of House 1 at Double Mer Point, a 19th-century Inuit winter settlement was analyzed by bringing together material culture, environmental data, spatial organization, technology and post-colonial studies. This presentation will be more about the process rather than the results obtained as I hope to emphasize the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to research.
