The Loyola Habitation in French Guyana: 25 Years of Scientific Research
Author(s): Yannick Le Roux
Year: 2020
Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Comparative Perspectives on European Colonization in the Americas: Papers in Honor of Réginald Auger" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the contributions of Réginald Auger and his team from the Université Laval in the investigation of Loyola, a Jesuit residence and plantation located in French Guyana. The research revealed an important site that allows us to better understand the colonial reality in the 18th century. The results extend beyond this geographical area to address the larger history of colonization with its corollaries: slavery, commercial networks, material culture, etc. This research represents a scientific milestone, as no other French colonial plantation site has been studied for as long a period and has yielded as many scientific works, both published and unpublished. This project has also contributed to the training of more than a hundred students and the completion of numerous academic theses based on data collected at the Loyola site.
