Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Heritage at Risk: Shifting Responses from Reactive to Proactive" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
Over the course of the last decade, the St. Augustine Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program and its preceeding organization have documented a number of intertidal and coastal sites in addition to the shipwrecks off St. Augutine. Wtih the increased changes to climate and sea level rise also arose an interest to reassess a number of these tidal sites and to take a proactive step to evaluating their condition before they disappear. Four of these intertidal sites were visited by the LAMP Field School in 2019 to document their current state and evaluate any change. This paper explores the way this Field School exercise acted as an opportunity for students to experience leading and working through the steps of a project. Additionally, it demonstrates a way for LAMP to proactively document any changes to known sites and begin a program to effectively monitor the vast array of sites in St. Augustine.
