Florida Tales Through Ales: Archaeology Interpretation through Historically Inspired Ales
Author(s): Emily Dietrich
Year: 2020
Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
The Florida Public Archaeology Network’s East Central Region partnered with Wops Hops Brewing Company in Sanford Florida to engage the public through the “Florida Tales through Ales” lecture series wherein a presentation by an archaeologist was paired with an ale brewed inspired by the archaeological research. The first ale, “She’s a Beaut,” drew inspiration from the Black Drink to highlight Florida’s pre-contact era and combined youpon holly, honey, and beautyberry. The ale was paired with a presentation by FPAN staff on Florida’s prehistoric past. Other historically themed ales include a pale ale with Valencia orange, honey, and Fuggle hops for the First Spanish era and an IPA with brown sugar, lavender, and indigo dye for the Plantation era, and another ale brewing now. The partnership allows for an overlooked audience to be reached in a relaxed setting, while the brewery received more traffic and sales; creating a truly “brew-tiful” partnership.
