Summary
This is a poster submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In compliance with federal law, the United States Forest Service has been conducting archaeological investigations of an upcoming timbering site within the White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire. This poster summarizes recent findings related to an antebellum familial grave site uncovered during archaeological survey. Four grave markers belonging to a McKeen family provide information on mid-19th century mortuary iconography, socioeconomic status, death, and disease. The dates of death suggest they each had perished in close succession to one another. Paired with archival research, the material evidence allows for the investigation of an agricultural farming family’s history while offering a basis for investigating New Hampshire’s early settlement, diaspora communities, and antebellum history.
