Year: 2020

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Recent Development of Maritime and Historical Archaeology Programs in South Florida" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Encompassing 2,900 square-nautical miles surrounding Florida’s longest archipelago, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary holds an extensive and diverse array of historical and cultural resources representing humanity’s interaction with the marine environment and the broader Atlantic World. New and old partnerships supporting archaeological research and public engagement offer exciting opportunities to reveal Florida Keys heritage. Co-incident with this renaissance, the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Florida’s Division of Historical Resources have been reviewing the sanctuary’s historical resource management. Recently released draft management documents invite the public to weigh in on a proposed course of action that will support the heritage preservation efforts of the co-managing agencies. Similarly, input on these efforts is sought from the professional archaeological community.
