Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Roads, Rivers, Rails and Trails (and more): The Archaeology of Linear Historic Properties" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In St. Johns County, there are 64 historic linear resources recorded in the Florida Master Site File, including bridges, roads, and railways. Linear resources played an important part in our history. The rivers, roads, and railways brought people to settle and visit the area. The rivers and the coastline were an attractive place where early Native Americans planted roots. At the time of contact, Europeans continued exploring the waterways and settling along the shorelines. The Spanish and the British felt that roads were important features to help develop St. Augustine, which was then a frontier outpost. The railroads were a major development for commerce. Henry Flagler’s arrival helped change the face of St. Augustine. He helped transform the lonely frontier post into a premier travel destination. This presentation will explore the history of some of these linear resources and their associated historical and archaeological sites.
